You: The Greatest Good

Beneath the surface of modern governance lies a hidden tug of war, silently shaping the fabric of law and politics in liberal democracies. This book uncovers and explores the two enduring sets of ideas behind this conflict – natural law and utilitarianism.   From the world’s largest hydroelectric facility to vaccine mandates and government tax-and-spend policies, You: The Greatest Good explores and reveals the diverse moral roots that have laid the groundwork and influenced the current direction of Western nations in the 21st century.   Examine the history, great minds, arguments, and applications of these two giants of moral philosophy and see how natural law is – now more than ever – in need of a resurgence. This is not a call to selfishness. Instead, this book simply aims to demonstrate that everyone should be treated as their own end rather than just another cog in the machine.

Driven by a lifelong passion for moral philosophy, J.A. Mitchell has always been fascinated by the foundations of moral decision-making in modern society. From an early age, he was exposed to a wealth of conflicting ideas and contrasting philosophical viewpoints. Raised by Christian parents who were on the periphery of the anti-establishment movements of the 1970s, J.A. Mitchell himself grew up in Atlantic Canada, during the late punk era under the influence of bands like Bad Religion and NOFX – opposing forc-es which both provided a strong foundation for his anti-authoritarian views.

While his own religious beliefs didn’t stick, they did help to infuse a deep sense of empathy for different beliefs while navigating diverse philosophical ideas across religious and political spectrums. With feet in conflicting worlds, over time it became increasingly clear that many people generalize, misrepresent, or even misunderstand the fundamental views and beliefs of those they disagree with. This insight led him to explore the concepts at the root of moral theory, aiming to better understand where modern misunder-standings were really coming from.

His first book, You: The Greatest Good, is an attempt to examine society’s moral roots through the balanced lens of both classical and contemporary thought.
